VEIC celebrates 40 years of driving clean energy impact with purpose
As energy affordability and load growth challenges rise, VEIC looks back at how decades of clean energy innovation and partnership have delivered measurable economic, health, and environmental outcomes for communities nationwide.
Winooski, VT — The national clean energy nonprofit VEIC is celebrating its 40th anniversary with the release of its 40-year impact report and anniversary film, highlighting the company’s four-decade history of turning fresh thinking into real-world impact through the benefits of clean energy. The report includes key milestones like launching the nation’s first energy efficiency utility, success stories of scaling new program models, and updated data on the nonprofit’s impact, which now exceeds $6.8 billion in lifetime customer electric and gas bill savings and over 116 million metric tons of CO2e avoided since 2000.
Since 1986, VEIC has championed the idea that clean energy solutions, leading with efficiency programs, are an effective path to saving consumers energy, lowering costs, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Today, communities across the country are benefiting from the organization’s vision.
“Forty years ago, VEIC’s founders made a bold bet that reliable, affordable energy was achievable for everyone — and that our communities and planet would be healthier because of it,” said CEO Rebecca Foster. “That bet is paying off, but there’s much more work ahead.”
For every $100 VEIC invests in energy efficiency incentives, customers save $870 over the life of their upgrades.
Growing that impact has taken time, but now, VEIC’s work has reached 86% of the United States through its consulting services and energy efficiency programs. This includes third-party program administration of the District of Columbia Sustainable Energy Utility, Efficiency Vermont, and Efficiency Smart, innovative pilot programs in California and Wisconsin, large-scale efficiency and electrification programs in New England and Colorado, plus national decarbonization planning projects.
In 2025 alone, VEIC’s work:
- Avoided 1.2 million metric tons of CO2e
- Delivered nearly $71 million in customer incentives
- Committed 54% of its impact in communities comprised of underserved groups, renters, or low- to moderate-income households
- Prioritized partnerships in 70% of consulting projects
As states work to balance affordability and grid reliability at scale and families continue to face higher energy costs, VEIC remains committed to delivering solutions that are accessible, affordable, and impactful for everyone.
