As of January 2025, Vermont has nearly 18,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads, a 41% increase in the number of EVs since last year, according to data from Drive Electric Vermont. The surge in EV adoption—doubling the state’s EV count in just two years—shows how successful the state’s holistic approach to driver and dealership support has been in helping more residents embrace the benefits of driving electric.

Drive Electric Vermont is a statewide private-public partnership coordinated by VEIC, which also operates Efficiency Vermont, the nation’s first Energy Efficiency Utility. In a press release, Efficiency Vermont highlighted how more than 50 new and used car dealerships are participating in its EV dealer incentives programs that help businesses invest in the equipment, tools, and training needed to sell and service EVs. Combined with state and federal efforts to grow Vermont’s public EV charging network, there are now more than 450 charging stations, some of which are hosted at local dealerships thanks in part to incentives from Efficiency Vermont.

These efforts helped the Green Mountain State rank first in the nation, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council, for reducing transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions.
