Last month Vermont Energy Investment Corporation (VEIC) Executive Director, Scott Johnstone, and Consulting Manager, Adam Sherman traveled to Wels, Austria to participate in World Sustainable Energy Days (WSED). WSED is Europe’s largest annual gathering in the field of energy sustainability, which brings together approximately 700 people from 57 countries for three days of conferences and interactive events.
This year, WSED included six concurrent conferences about wood pellets, nearly zero energy buildings, energy efficiency, smart façade materials, and young researchers. WSED is hosted by the Upper Austrian Energy Agency (or OÖ Energiesparverband) with whom VEIC has collaborated closely over the past seven years.
Both Scott and Adam presented at WSED conferences, sharing their expertise and information about VEIC’s ongoing work to advance sustainable energy practices. Scott presented at the Energy Efficiency Services conference about VEIC’s implementation models for its three energy efficiency utilities: Efficiency Vermont, Efficiency Smart, and the D.C. Sustainable Energy Utility.
Adam presented at the conference on wood pellets about his work to stimulate regional economic development in the Northeastern U.S. through the Biomass Energy Resource Center at VEIC. Specifically, he discussed how dramatically decreasing dependence on imported heating oil by increasing use of wood heating fuels can act as a key driver of the local economy.
In addition to sharing information about VEIC’s work Scott and Adam made valuable connections with fellow participants and learned about many innovative approaches Europe is taking to advance sustainable energy use. Participating in information exchanges like WSED allows VEIC to bring more value to its current and future clients.
