On November 17, 2015 the Obama Administration announced the commitments of 68 cities, states, and businesses to make solar more accessible to Americans. The announcement followed a National Community Solar Summit at the White House, which marked the first meeting of the National Community Solar Partnership. Vermont Energy Investment Corporation (VEIC) Distributed Resource Director, David Hill, was one of twelve business representatives to present on “Community Solar in Action” at the Summit. Hill’s presentation detailed VEIC’s vision for its most recently established social enterprise subsidiary, Sun Shares LLC.
The purpose of Sun Shares LLC is to bring innovative design strategies of community solar to the employer/employee benefit sector to reduce barriers to low and moderate income solar participation. Beginning in Vermont with several employer solar locations in the next few years, Sun Shares LLC anticipates scaling nationally over the next three to five years with employers that represent significantly high percentages of lower and moderate wage earners. This effort builds upon VEIC’s leadership in reducing the economic and environmental impacts of energy use.
