A home energy rating is a standard measure of a home's energy efficiency. In Vermont and several other states, the uniform, national 'Star' rating system known as the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) has been adopted.
Homes are rated from 1 Star to 5 Stars, with 4 Stars or higher considered energy efficient. In Vermont, ratings are issued by Vermont Energy Investment Corporation (VEIC), a nonprofit organization established in 1987.
Services such as Efficiency Vermont's Vermont ENERGY STAR® Homes require an energy rating of 5 Stars or higher along with specific lighting, ventilation and combustion safety installations to qualify a home for financial incentives.
