The Challenge
With no national residential green building program available, a group of Vermont builders and design professionals called Building for Social Responsibility (BSR) sought to develop a meaningful green homes standard and then implement it in Vermont.

Solution
As a member of BSR, VEIC played a key role in leading the effort to secure funding to develop a Vermont residential green building program, worked with BSR to pilot and implement the program in Vermont, and represented the program on committees working to create national standards for green building.

Results
The development of the Vermont Builds Greener (VBG) Scorecard resulted in the nation's most comprehensive and respected residential green building rating system. In partnership with BSR, VEIC piloted implementation of the Scorecard in Vermont homes and in a University of Vermont student housing project. The Cape Light Compact, a consortium of Massachusetts municipal utilities, adopted the Scorecard as the basis for its new construction program. The National Audubon Society chose to use the Scorecard and VBG certification for all of its new nature centers smaller than 8,000 square feet. And continual interest in VBG from Northeast states indicates an expanding role for the VBG Scorecard in our bioregion.
