New York Power Authority Renewable Energy Consulting Services

Challenge:

To provide renewable energy consulting services to the New York Power Authority (NYPA), the largest state-owned electric utility in the U.S. NYPA is a national leader in promoting energy efficiency, new energy technologies, and electric transportation initiatives. NYPA operates 18 generating facilities throughout New York State and more than 1,400 circuit miles of transmission lines which provide some of the lowest cost power in New York State. NYPA's mission is to provide clean, low-cost, and reliable energy for the benefit of its customers: all New Yorkers. NYPA customers include 40+ municipal and cooperative electric utilities, government agencies, non-profit organizations, schools, and colleges throughout New York State.

Solution:

As part of a broad-based efficiency and renewable energy consulting team, VEIC is responsible for managing and delivering renewable energy technical support and consulting services to the utility.

Results:

VEIC began work on a three-year contract with NYPA in mid-2009. To date, VEIC's renewable energy experts have: helped NYPA develop a Request for Proposals for a 100 MW Solar Electric Photovoltaic (PV) Initiative to be launched in December 2009; developed the concept for an Open Market PV Solicitation to be launched in 2010; and assessed opportunities for stimulating solar on schools throughout New York State.
