VEIC Hosts Press Conference on the Benefits of Smart Grid
August 20, 2012
Senator Sanders speaks at the press conference while David Hallquist (Vermont Electric Cooperative), Scott Johnstone (VEIC), Paul Burns (Vermont Public Interest Research Group), and Brian Shupe (Vermont Natural Resources Council) look on.
On a visit to the VEIC offices today, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders discussed work that is currently being done by utilities to implement smart grid technology in Vermont. "The bottom line," he said, "is that smart grid offers real benefits for consumers and the environment." The Senator noted that smart grid has greatly improved responses by utilities during major storms and outage events, and that it will play a critical role in enabling utilities to better integrate renewable energy sources into the grid.
He was joined by representatives of the Vermont Electric Cooperative, the Vermont Natural Resources Council, and the Vermont Public Interest Research Group, as well as by VEIC Executive Director Scott Johnstone.
“VEIC has a 25-year history of supporting and implementing policies, programs, and technologies that will help individuals and businesses reduce their contribution to global climate change,” said Johnstone. “Smart grid technology will support consumers in attaining greater use of renewable energy, electric vehicles, conservation, and energy efficiency – all of which can help consumers to reduce their carbon footprint and gain control of their total energy bill.”
